When does a bass or guitar need an intonation adjustment?

Whenever you change strings, or change string height, adjust the truss rod or find that it just doesn’t sound right.

What is an intonation adjustment exactly?

When intonation is right, all the notes are true to what they should be, ie an A is an A anywhere on the neck, and the harmonics are in harmony. If the intonation is right, the center of mass of each string aligns with the 12th fret. That is accomplished by changing the length of the string until the alignment is correct.
